A »byte« is a unit of digital information, indicating 8 bits of memory. A bit (short for »binary digit«) represents the computer’s smallest unit of information and can take on one of two values: 0 or 1. Consequently, a byte represents 28 or 256 conditions, which can be interpreted with the numbers 0 to 255. The byte is a fundamental term in IT as a standard measure of digital data and is as ever-present in everyday life as the computer, through the general usage of the words »megabyte« and »gigabyte«.
