In the past year, Paul Spengemann received the ART COLOGNE Award for NEW POSITIONS, made possible by Deutsche Telekom. In the exhibition linked with the prize, he realises a new work in the artothek – Space for young art.

At ART COLOGNE 2017, Spengemann presented the film About Falling in Love and even Little Rubber Ducks, which deals with the audiovisual strategies of advertising. In that he adopts their standardised pictorial language and, in addition to the original sound of his recordings, also makes use of found audio material, he plays with common conventions of representation, which rely on effects. The images seem familiar, and yet strange.

For the solo exhibition in the artothek – Space for young art, Paul Spengemann is developing a new work, in which, in contrast with the previous, the processes of production merge with those of presentation and reach their zenith in a digitally generated shadow battle. Who is actually speaking here remains open, reality and imagination have long since become one.
In his films, he uses the particular features and possibilities of the film medium, interviews them and plays with the viewing habits of the public. Spengemann confronts viewers with a conceptual type of filmmaking, in which the camera always plays an important role as a shaping instrument. His films also have in common the fact that form and content can't be separated from one another. The chosen form is always also the content of his films.
Paul Spengemann (born 1987) has studied since 2011 with Andreas Slominski and Angela Schanelec at the Hochschule für bildende Künste (University of fine arts), Hamburg, and was a scholarship holder at Goldsmiths, University of London in 2016.
The works of the recipient of the Columbus Award for Contemporary Art has to date been shown nationally and internationally at, among other events, the São Paul International Short Film Festival, the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen and the 66th Berlinale, Berlin, as well as in the Goethe Institute Mexico, Mexico City.
Spengemann was honoured with the Federal Prize for Art Students 2016/2017. In 2017, he had his first solo exhibition with Walking Stick in the Produzentengalerie Hamburg, and his film of the same name could also be viewed in the Double Feature series of the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt
