“Monstera deliciosa“ is the name of a tropical plant well known in the homes and offices of the 1950s and 1960s and having a recent comeback. Unpretentious and growing in the half shade the plant is found on window sills and benches trying to hide many an architectural faux pas.
For example the dubious tiled facades of post-war buildings in Cologne which are a favoured motif in Nico Joana Weber’s work since she moved here in 2010. At the artothek the artist will present new works evolving from a photo archive of a tile producing company. Using the found material she creates a site specific installation reflecting the times of reconstruction in the 1950s during which also the artothek has been given its characteristic design.
For her work Nico Joana Weber is awarded with the “Horizont-Raum” prize by the Freunde der artothek Köln e.V.
On occasion of the exhibition opening the artist book “Monstera deliciosa” (Grass Publishers, Brauweiler) will be released.
Nico Joana Weber, born in Bonn in 1983, studied fine art and art history at Goldsmiths College, London (2005-2008) and received her postgraduate degree from the Academy of Media Arts Cologne in 2013.
